Personal statement

William (Bill) is a Research Support Specialist for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) at the University of Strathclyde, with over 25 years’ experience in research technology, information systems, and digital infrastructure. Previously a Computer Officer for the Department of Psychology, he has worked closely with researchers, academics, and students, providing technical expertise and practical solutions to enhance research processes and outcomes. An accredited Chartered Scientist (CSci) and member of the Institute of Science and Technology (IST), Bill remains actively engaged with the broader social, political, and economic factors that shape research and higher education. He has played a key role in developing research systems, improving workflows, compliance, and access to research information. His expertise spans data management, software development, research analytics, and knowledge exchange, ensuring researchers have the tools and support they need. Bill has also contributed to Open Access initiatives, GDPR compliance, and Web Accessibility, ensuring research outputs are accessible, secure, and aligned with institutional and external requirements. He has been actively involved in postgraduate teaching and mentoring, supporting students in developing the technical and analytical skills required for research. With a practical approach and a focus on continuous improvement, Bill is committed to enhancing research infrastructure, fostering collaboration, and ensuring digital systems meet the evolving needs of researchers.
